What’s a “Stop of Light”?

In photographic terms, a “stop” is a term used to denote each successive halving (or doubling) of either (a) the quantum of light falling on a medium (film or digital sensor), or, (b) the sensitivity of the medium itself.

The range of tonal values (latitude) of slide film and some digital sensors is equal to five stops – enough to render great detail in the image. End of technical lecture!

In the context of our Photography Tours & Expeditions, a Stop of Light is… well, where we stop for the light – it’s a Destination. A great one at that!
